Developing a Business Plan

Telehealth business plans are dependent on the impetus for initiation, the organizational model that is chosen and the relationships among the organizations. A business plan can be developed for an overall network or for a specific application. The scope of possibilities and the complexity of relationships make it difficult to identify a ‘one-size-fits-all’.
Business plans should be continually updated and contain all the information that is necessary to make decisions on the future of the program or application. The person who seeks information on telehealth business plans most often becomes the expert on telehealth business plans for his/her organization. Go ahead, roll up your sleeves and become that expert.
Check within your organization: Most organizations have a preferred standard format that can be adjusted to fit telehealth initiatives.
Visit the ATA website: The American Telemedicine Association’s Business and Finance Special Interest Group has resources that include a business plan template, a budget template, and others.
The most helpful portion of the Business Plan Template begins on page 21 of the document.
Consider other models: Many business plan models are available on web sites and through software vendors. It’s worth spending time to discover if one is a good fit for your unique situation.
Whichever model you choose, MATTeR staff can help. We can assist you in discovering the experience of other telehealth programs and adapting the lessons learned to your unique situation. Contact us with your questions @ info@midwesttrc.org
