Formal Strategic Planning

MATTeR

Hub sites and telehealth networks should consider a formal strategic plan with the involvement of a variety of stakeholders.  The process will set the stage for future development and will garner the buy-in that is necessary for long-term commitment.

Strategic planning does not have to be a daunting event.  If your telehealth network/program has a grant, you most likely have something close to a strategic plan since grant proposals often include similar components.

The strategic planning session may take 1-2 days, depending on the depth and scope that you need.  It is recommended that the group meet away from the work venue so routine business does not interrupt the process.  Once completed, an annual or semi-annual renewal can be shorter.

An independent facilitator is highly recommended to assure the process stays on course and the end result becomes a usable document.  Meet with your facilitator ahead of time to share what you want to accomplish and set the agenda.  Strategic planning agendas usually include the following:

  • Establishment or revision of
    • Mission – A statement of what you do
    • Vision – A statement of how you would like things to be
    • Values – The guiding believes from which you operate
  • Environmental scan  - this is a presentation or discussion of the driving forces that affect the way you do business:  competition, technology advances, demographic trends, social and economic influences, etc.
  • A SWOT analysis which is the identification of
    • Strengths
    • Weaknesses
    • Opportunities
    • Threats
  • Identification of strategic goals and objectives
  • Action plans may be included in the strategic session or may be detailed by an individual or small group following the meeting.  At this point the objectives become measurable with specific actions, responsible parties and a time line.

Following the strategic planning session it is important to determine how and when communication takes place.  Will this be a public document or only shared among the stakeholders.  It is also important to monitor progress on the strategic plan and communicate accomplishments.
